HOME DELIVERED PROGRAM:
Each day, nearly 600 home-delivered meals are provided to participants who are elderly, homebound, disabled, or otherwise at risk of food insecurity throughout Shawnee and Jefferson Counties regardless of age or the inability to contribute toward the cost of the meal.  In addition to meal provision, services include nutrition screening, education, nutrition assessment and counseling, as appropriate. Home-delivered meals also represent an essential service for many caregivers, by helping them to maintain their own health and well-being.Volunteers who deliver meals play a vital role by reporting to Meals on Wheels any health and environmental changes or crises they may have observed during their visits This includes participants that did not answer their door.  Reported or suspected issues will be immediately addressed by Meals on Wheels staff to carry-out next steps as previously outlined by participants.Meals served are required to provide at least one-third of the daily recommended dietary allowances established by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council.  Physicians may also order a special diet to assist in the management of chronic illnesses up to and including: diabetes, kidney failure, congestive heart failure and chewing/swallowing problems.  In an effort to meet rural participant needs, Meals on Wheels has established a Multiple Meal Delivery program. Multiple meals are delivered at one time each week and wellness calls are placed daily as a means of providing a safety checkWHAT WE ADDRESS:Food Insecurity-According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service, individuals who are most at risk for food insecurity are the elderly and disabled who are less mobile, have health problems and live alone. * 83% of Meals on Wheels participants reported that the delivered meal is their most important source of nutritious food.Safety/Isolation-On a daily basis, reports of crises related to health and environmental changes are immediately followed up on by Meals on Wheels staff.   *Nearly 50% of participants reported that the Meals on Wheels volunteer is the only person they see or interact with during the day.Health- Nutrition services are used to prevent, treat and reduce the risk for chronic health conditions. *94% of participants reported that Meals on Wheels helped maintain or improve their health.
